🌿 The Hydration Mistake Almost Every Woman Makes (And Yes… Your Hair Feels It)

by Erin, Founder of Erin & Mae Co.

If you’ve ever stood in the shower thinking,
“Why is my hair still dry? I literally drink water all day,”
this blog is for you, friend.

Because I’m about to tell you something I wish someone had told me years ago:

You might be dehydrated… even if you drink water constantly.

I know.
Rude.

But hear me out.

Most women are walking around subtly dehydrated, not the dramatic “lost in the desert” kind, but the quiet, sneaky kind that shows up as:

  • frizz that won’t calm down

  • “my hair feels crunchy” moments

  • tight, itchy scalp

  • slow hair growth

  • oily roots + dry ends

  • brittle strands that break just from looking at them

And guess what?

Your hair is whispering for electrolytes.

Not the neon sports drink kind, not the “I just ran a marathon” kind…
I’m talking about actual minerals your body needs to use the water you drink.

Because here’s the truth:

đź’§ Water hydrates.

Electrolytes help your body absorb it.

You can drink a gallon a day, but without minerals, it just… passes through.
(Again, rude.)

Electrolytes = sodium + potassium + magnesium + trace minerals
aka the things your cells need so water can actually get inside them.

When your body is low on electrolytes, you see it in:

  • your skin

  • your energy

  • your digestion

  • and your HAIR

Your scalp is skin and it’s thirsty too.

🌱 So how do electrolytes actually help your hair?

Great question. Let’s nerd out for a minute:

1. They support scalp hydration

A dry, tight, irritated scalp can’t grow soft, healthy strands.
Electrolytes help balance moisture and calm irritation.

2. They regulate oil production

Ever notice your hair gets oily when you’re dehydrated?
Your body’s just trying to compensate.

3. They support follicle function

Hydrated cells = happy follicles = healthier hair.

4. They help prevent brittleness

When the inner structure of the hair strand is dehydrated, breakage skyrockets.

5. They boost overall hair resilience

Hydration is literally one of the gentlest ways to improve hair health.

No 10-step routine required.

🌊 So… how do you add electrolytes without making it complicated?

Because we don’t do complicated over here. I am a busy homeschooling mom, so simplicity is key.

Here are tiny, doable supports you can start today:

✨ 1. Add a clean electrolyte mix to your morning water

Look for one without dyes or heavy sweeteners. This brand, Instant Hydration is pretty clean. Still natural flavors but otherwise it checks out.

✨ 2. Add a pinch of mineral-rich sea salt to a large glass

Just a tiny pinch, it’s a surprisingly effective hack. I do this daily with a squeeze of lemon or lime. It has helped my hormones and decreased night sweats on my period. It's been so simple but LIFE CHANGING YALL.

✨ 3. Sip throughout the day instead of chugging

Your cells absorb more that way.

✨ 4. Eat more potassium-rich foods

Coconut water, bananas, leafy greens.
(Easy enough for even the busiest day.)

✨ 5. Pair hydration with scalp care

Moisture inside + nourishment outside = hair that behaves.

Try using a hydrating mist (like rosemary-infused aloe… hi Mermaid Spray 👋) on days your scalp feels tight or dry.

✨ The surprising truth: Your hair doesn’t just need water, it needs minerals.

You’re not doing anything wrong.
You’re not behind.
Your scalp isn’t failing.
Your hair isn’t “broken.”

It just needs support in the gentlest, most elemental way.

Hydration is a whole-body thing, and when your body is well-nourished, your hair follows.

And honestly?
There’s something beautiful about that.

If you want help creating a simple hydration ritual that supports your scalp AND your hair, I made one for you:

✨ The Mermaid Ritual
A pairing of nourishment + hydration designed for busy women who want healthy hair without the overwhelm.

Mermaid Bundle

And make sure you are using a scalp massager too to help with circulation.
