Question from Ashley: I have heard coconut and rosemary are good for healthy hair, is this true and why?

Question from Ashley: "Hey, I have been hearing coconut and rosemary are good for hair health, is this true? What would you recommend? Thanks!"

Okay, I LOVE questions. Like your girl has studied hair and taken healthy scalp/hair care courses and gone through HOURS and hours of the chemistry behind product formuation. So let's chat.

Rosemary is a big buzzword in the haircare world; non toxic or not.

A study published in 2015 compared rosemary oil to minoxidil 2% in men with androgenetic alopecia.

  • Participants who massaged their scalps with rosemary oil twice a day for six months experienced similar hair growth as those who used 2% minoxidil.

  • The study found that rosemary oil was as effective as minoxidil in stimulating hair growth.
This is just one study, but there have been many. This is why I absolutely love using rosemary in my Mermaid Texturizing Spray. I infuse organic rosemary into argan oil and I also use rosemary essential oil in it. It is touted as the #1 hairgrowth herb.

However, be careful with products that say they contain rosemary but also say the word fragrance. Companies have been getting sneaky and saying essential oil blend and they can blend essential oils into unknown fragrances.

Now what about coconut?? Coconut, in the form of oil or milk, offers several benefits for hair health, primarily due to its rich composition of fatty acids, particularly lauric acid, which easily penetrates the hair shaft. This penetration helps to hydrate and strengthen hair, reducing frizz, split ends, and hair breakage, while also promoting a healthier, more manageable scalp.

Everyone is getting hair masks, which are amazing. BUT hear me out. what if you got a can of organic full fat coconut milk and poured it over your hair as a rinse post shampooing??

I am talking 1/4-1/2 cup and rub it in, let sit for 3-5 minutes while you shave your legs and pits and then rinse. And then condition. I personally haven't tried it, but there is no need for expensive coconut hair treatments when that would work so beautifully. Sometimes we complicate our haircare when really, simplicity, is amazing.
Hopefully this helps Ashley and thanks for your question.
