What Healthy Hair Growth Really Looks Like (And Why You’re Closer Than You Think)
by Erin, Founder of Erin & Mae Co.
If you’re anything like me, January hits and suddenly you expect your hair to grow three inches, behave perfectly, and look like it’s filming a shampoo commercial.
But real, healthy hair growth doesn’t work like that and that is actually a good thing.
Let’s walk through what’s happening beneath the surface, what’s normal, and how to support your scalp in a way that brings real results (not overwhelm).
🌱 1. Your Hair Grows in Seasons, Not OvernightHair growth happens in cycles:
Anagen — Growth Phase
This is where actual growth happens. A healthy scalp stays in this phase the longest.
Catagen — Transition Phase
Your follicle takes a quick breather. Totally normal.
Telogen — Rest + Shed Phase
This is where shedding happens (and where most women panic).
But shedding isn’t failure, it’s part of clearing space for new, healthier growth.
Your goal isn’t “perfect hair.”
Your goal is supporting this natural cycle so it can function the way it’s designed.
This is the part no one tells you.
Hair grows beneath the surface before you ever see new length.
Just because you don’t see a difference doesn’t mean nothing is happening.
Microscopic growth → leads to strand strength → leads to visible change.
When women tell me:
“I don’t think anything is happening yet…”
I remind them:
“That means the foundation is healing.”
💧 3. The Scalp You Ignore Becomes the Hair You Don’t LoveMost women focus on ends,
but it’s your scalp that determines:
-
growth
-
shedding
-
oil balance
-
texture
-
hydration
-
softness
-
and long-term hair health
A dry, inflamed, irritated, or tight scalp cannot grow healthy hair consistently.
But a nourished, hydrated, balanced scalp?
It becomes a garden.
You’re growing a garden.
✨ 4. Small Habits Matter More Than Big RoutinesWomen often think they need a whole new system. Nope!
Tiny habits move the needle:
• 2-minute scalp massage with our scalp massager
• Rosemary + aloe hydration (like Mermaid Spray)
• Weekly rosemary tea rinses
• Warm oil pre-wash(I like argan or jojoba) for moisture balance
• Clean dry shampoo to stretch wash days
• Avoiding heavy synthetic fragrances
Consistency > Perfection.
Always.
Let’s normalize real numbers:
-
¼–½ inch per month
-
Seasonal shedding (especially winter)
-
Slower growth when stressed
-
Faster growth when nourished + hydrated
-
Texture improving before visible length
-
“Stall weeks” (everybody has these)
Progress isn’t linear, but it is happening.
🌸 6. Your Hair Needs Patience (and So Do You)Hair growth is slow, tender, and deeply connected to your hormones, stress, and daily habits.
You’re not behind.
Your hair isn’t failing.
You’re not doing anything wrong.
Healing takes time, and that’s okay.
Give your scalp the same grace.
You’re closer than you think.
